Meet Emily
Hi, I'm Em.
My professional background includes more than 15 years in nursing, alongside experience within the disability sector as both a Support Worker and Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner.
Working across nursing, direct disability support and behaviour support has shaped the way I see people. It has taught me to look beyond symptoms or behaviours in isolation and instead be curious about what might be happening underneath them.
Over the years, one thing became increasingly obvious to me: we are often expected to live in bodies we were never properly taught to understand.
As a nurse, I have seen women leave healthcare settings feeling dismissed, unheard or confused about their own bodies, sometimes with a prescription to manage their symptoms, but without the understanding or answers they were searching for.
And I haven't only witnessed this professionally. I've had my own battles with understanding my body and hormones too. As a woman, I've experienced firsthand how changes in our bodies can affect our emotions, energy, relationships and everyday lives, often without us ever being taught why.
We were taught how to manage a period, but very few of us were taught how to understand a menstrual cycle.
That combination of professional experience, personal experience, curiosity and frustration with the gaps in menstrual and hormone health education eventually led me to create Be Heard Health.
With so much conflicting information online, understanding your body can feel overwhelming. I believe it doesn't have to be.
I am currently undertaking further specialist study in menstrual health through the Menstrual Health Institute, building on my existing healthcare background and continuing to deepen my knowledge in this space.
Because understanding your body can be the first step towards being heard.
